Note: This tutorial is designed for the Reforged and the Frozen Throne version of the Warcraft III World Editor, not Reign of Chaos which requires SLK editing.
If you are wondering how to import custom models into your own map, this is THE tutorial for it. For importing models into Reign of Chaos maps, refer to this tutorial

Requirements:

– Warcraft III World Editor of The Reforged or the Frozen Throne expansion – The .mdx and .blp files for the model you want to import.

Check the model

Make sure that the model has all files it needs!

– A Model for Warcraft 3 is a .mdx file which has its own textures. These textures can be ingame textures or custom textures. Native / Vanilla Warcraft textures are already in the game and have no need to be imported again. – To see which textures a model is using you can open it with the “War3 Model Editor” which can be downloaded here. – Open the .mdx file with the “War3 Model Editor”, it should look like this! – If the model is missing a texture, it will be replaced by black. If that happens, be sure you have all the required textures. (please be aware that ingame textures can be shown as black or squares too. like the hero glow in the example picture)
– To see what textures are currently being used by the model, you need to go to “Windows” -> “Texture Manager”. This will show you a list of all the textures the model file requires and also their paths that need to be changed in the import editor. Be sure you got them all.
– If the model looks fine, it’s ready to be imported.

Import the model

play with the model you just imported

– First, you need to open your map with the editor.
– When your map is finished loading, you need to go into the “Asset Manager”(Reforged) or in the “Import Manager”(The Frozen Throne). You can go there by clicking the icon in the toolbar or by pressing the hotkey (F12). – The selected manager will open up with all the imported files.
– Use the icon in the toolbar(icon is shown) or right click and select “import a file”. You can also import a whole folder in the “Reforged” editor, but be aware that it will import everything inside the folder. (Make sure it contains only the files you want to import.)
– Now you need to change the filepaths of the imported files. Most of the custom models should work by removing the “war3mapImported\” – prefix so “war3mapImported\BansheeMissile.mdx” becomes “BansheeMissile.mdx”. You can check the paths in the “War3 Model Editor” as mentioned before.
– Once you’ve modified all the paths, all you need to do is save the map. -Lastly go into the “Object Editor” and give your unit the new mdx.
-and voila.. the model should work in the editor.
